Course description
This live-virtual MBS Bootcamp offers experiential learning designed to prepare SLPs for real-world clinical environments with firsthand experience in swallowing diagnostics in Modified Barium Swallow Studies. Participants view and interpret two live virtual MBS studies with specific emphasis on incorporating anatomy and physiology into clinical decision-making.
Dr. Ianessa Humbert provides real-time feedback about how to operate and lead MBS studies, including providing instruction to radiological technologists and patients when trialing various textures, postures, and maneuvers. Real-time education and counseling in easy-to-understand language are encouraged and trained in the MBS Bootcamp.

Learning outcomes
- Explain the physiological processes involved in normal and disordered swallowing
- Demonstrate understanding of conducting a modified barium swallow evaluation
- Interpret real-time MBS results to inform clinical decisions and intervention strategies
- Differentiate MBS swallowing differences among young adults, presbyphagia, and dysphagia, including strategies for compensation and rehabilitation

- 211:30 AM–12:00 PM — View a live virtual MBS study of a healthy older adult (presbyphagia)
- 312:00–12:30 PM — Review and discuss findings, interpret, and summarize
- 412:30–1:00 PM — View a live virtual MBS study of an individual with dysphagia
- 51:00–1:30 PM — Review and discuss findings, interpret, and summarize
- 61:30–2:00 PM — Discuss clinical-documentation summaries that prioritize physiology and patient-focused recommendations
