Food feels stuck in your throat or chest
A bite lingers after you swallow, or there is a lump feeling in your throat. Here is what it can mean.

What it can feel like
A bite that sits or presses after you swallow. Needing water to finish every few bites. Some people feel a lump in the throat even between meals.
Where it sticks matters
Some people point to the throat. Others point lower, behind the breastbone — that is the food pipe (esophagus). The spot you feel it is a real clue that helps us pick the right test.
Common reasons
Food may truly move slowly. There may be a narrow spot, muscles squeezing out of rhythm, or irritation from stomach acid. Sometimes the feeling lingers even after food has passed safely. A swallow study shows which one is happening for you.
How we can help
We can watch your swallow in motion here in our office. If the problem sits lower in the food pipe, we connect you with the right stomach specialist and share what we found. The fix depends on the cause — so we look first.
