Your swallow test was abnormal — now what?
Take a breath. “Abnormal” is a starting line, not a verdict. Here is what the words mean.
Normal vs. abnormal swallowing in motion

It is a description, not a sentence
An abnormal result describes how food and liquid moved during the test — nothing more. Swallowing problems range from mild to serious, and many improve with the right plan.
The words you might see
Residue: some food or liquid stayed behind. Penetration: liquid dipped toward the top of the airway. Aspiration: some went below the vocal folds, toward the lungs. Each has degrees — the details shape the plan.
You are allowed to ask
Good questions: What exactly did my swallow do? How serious is it? What can improve it? Can I see the video with you? Asking for a second look at an outside study is normal — bring the report and the disc.
