Signs that swallowing deserves a closer look
Common changes to notice — and why no single symptom can diagnose a swallowing problem.

What is a swallowing disorder
Dr. Humbert explains what a swallowing disorder is and how it shows up in everyday eating.
Warning signs
Coughing or choking at meals. A wet or gurgly voice after swallowing. Food sticking. Pain with swallowing. Meals taking much longer. Weight loss without trying. Avoiding foods that used to be easy.
The silent one
Sometimes food or liquid enters the airway without a cough. This is called silent aspiration and can contribute to lung complications. Symptoms alone cannot confirm or rule it out; instrumental testing may be needed.
What caregivers can watch for
Frequent throat clearing at meals. Food left in the mouth after swallowing. Drooling. Repeated chest infections. New pickiness or refusing to eat.
